RANTRAVEREVIEW: Whatever happened to Grantland's Reader's Revenge?

My favorite re-occuring Grantland piece has always been Reader's Revenge, which started off as an addendum to "About Last Weekend", (a feature that used to exist in WritingthePine 1.0 before the "Great Server Crash of 2012.") Similar to Deadspin's "DHF" Read more

Kyrie Irving’s not on the team this time around, but when he is, watch out.  And Blake Griffin.  No words necessary.

A Splendid Tom Brady Interview

Tom Brady, Courtesy: ABC

Tom Brady sat down with SI.com for an interview recently to promote Under Armour’s new “Spine” sneaker technology.  It’s probably one of the best interviews I’ve read in a long time.  In it he talks about Gisele, Uggs, Call Me Maybe, and the Gronk.  Check it out here.  And below are some of my favorite parts.

SI.com: You mentioned you have two kids. There are rumors that you guys are having a third. I don’t know if you want to get into that or not.

Brady: I like working on it.

Hi-five!

SI.com: Do you really wear Uggs?

Brady: Damn right I do.

SI.com: Have you gotten your teammates to wear Uggs?

Brady: Damn right I have.

Not just a spokesman…

SI.com: Are you looking forward to seeing Rob Gronkowski dance? He’s sort of known for that.

Brady: I’ve seen him dance plenty of times. On pools, on tables, everywhere.

SI.com: Does he ever wear a shirt in the locker room?

Brady: [Sad, defeated voice] Oh, God. No… No.

GROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONK

Congratulations LeBron James and the Miami Heat

The King’s coronation is finally complete.  After two years of vitriol, LeBron James finally completed his quest of winning an NBA championship.  I know he brought all that hate on himself, but the guy just put on one of the greatest playoff runs in NBA history.  And he completed it with a triple double in the championship-clinching game.  It’s time to move on from hating LeBron to appreciating him for who he is (the greatest basketball player since MJ) to who he could be (the greatest basketball player ever).

Did Jerry Sandusky Really Say That?

Posted on by Rich in Sports | Leave a comment

WritingthePine is introducing a new game we like to call: Did Jerry Sandusky Really Say That?

Here’s the quote:

It was just us in the whole place and we were just going room to room – just bouncing and flipping all over the place, hitting each other with balls, sweating, our shirts filthy. We were just dirty, stinky boys, you know?

So did Jerry Sandusky say that as he left the courthouse in Bellefonte, PA?

(See below for answer)

Nope. These words were uttered by none other than former Giants RB and current 49ers RB Brandon Jacobs.

Thanks for playing everyone and sorry for ruining a feel-good story by running it through the Sandusky filter.

Full story can be found here.

Here’s a funny clip from a few days ago from Jimmy Kimmel Live showing Roy Hibbert and Jeremy Lin doing a Skype scavenger hunt.  Pretty good stuff.  @JLin7 didn’t really look like he was trying though…Roy on the other hand was on point.  Even if he cheated on the first one lol.

Thoughts on the Dream Team Documentary

So last night the highly anticipated Dream Team documentary finally aired and it did not disappoint.  It was riveting to see tape from the practices as well as the infamous scrimmage against the college kids.  On top of that, it was just cool to see highlights and clips from these Olympics because it helped me to to appreciate more how special and unique that team was.  I was only 7 years old at the time the Dream Team assembled so while I know I watched them, I’m sure I didn’t really grasp what I was watching.  Only as I grew older did I realize how great that team was.  Which makes me wonder where I can find full videos of all the games the Dream Team played.  Anybody?

Anyway, here are some random thoughts I had while watching the doc: Read more

Getting Ready for the Dream Team Documentary

Posted on by dave in Sports | Leave a comment

I don’t know about you guys but I am pretty pumped to watch the new Dream Team documentary that will be airing tomorrow at 9pm on NBA TV.  It really was such a historic time for basketball fans around the world and a part of me wishes I was a little bit older at the time so I could remember it more.  (The other part of me wishes I wasn’t even born at the time so I wouldn’t have to languish through the everyday terrible responsibilities of being an adult.  But that’s neither here nor there.)  Just watching clips and reading articles like the Oral History of the Dream Team just released by GQ gives me the chills.  Not sure if that’s just extremely nerdy for me to say or if it really was just a momentous occasion.  I’m gonna go with the latter.  Anyway, check out that GQ article and make sure you tune into NBA TV tomorrow for the documentary.
