Battle of Ballpark Food: The Real Subway Series

Battle of the Ballpark Food The Real Subway Series

With the conclusion of the first part of the the 2009 Subway Series, it would only make sense to extend the hyper-competitiveness of the New York Yankees and the New York Mets to the different culinary players in each of the new stadiums.

There are some ”veterans” around from each of the old stadiums that made the move across the street at both the new Yankee Stadium and Citifield.  But leading off this season-long battle of ballpark food will a “free-agent” that signed with the Yankees over the offseason.

Leading off the top of the 1st inning, located on the field level along the right field foul line:

Garlic Fries!

These bad boys are as good as they look.  Inspired by the garlic fries popularized at AT&T Field, these crisp, hot fries fresh out of the fryer are doled out onto little cardboard containers adorned by the famous interlocking NY logo.  More importantly, the fresh minced garlic mixture is generously ladled onto the aforementioned fries.

Pure heaven in your mouth as the warm, starchy potato absorbs the strong garlic taste forming a beautiful relationship only briefly interrupted by cold beer or a beverage of your choice.

I must warn you that the garlic fries are not for the feint of heart – as the garlic can be overwhelming while the generous portions may turn off those trying to play tonsil-hockey with the date they brought to the ballpark.

Worse yet, you may be unapproachable to the following group of people.

Anti-Garlic Fries (for both reasons mentioned)

Anti-Garlic Fries (for both reasons mentioned above)

And of course knowing my luck, after consuming an entire batch of garlic fries, I would come within an errant Chuck Knoblauch throw of none other than the talented and beautiful Kimberly Jones of the YES Network.

So all in all, while it may be on the pricey side, the Garlic Fries are one of better food option at Yankee Stadium.  They will satisfy you as a stand-alone snack (or meal), but accompanied by a burger and a beer and you will have yourself a perfect start to a trip to the ballpark.

Price: Small $6 ; Large $9

The bottom the 1st inning will be coming up shortly.  Citifield’s first offering at the plate.  See you soon!

Editor’s Note (6/16/2009 – 10:38 AM):  The Mets won a cointoss and will be the home team for this piece. (Actually, it’s because the Subway Series was in the Bronx first Mr. Writing Illini.  Not because the Mets are NY’s home team.  Don’t be ridiculous.)

His pitiful attempt to play soccer (2 own-goals, and 300 orange slices eaten) are only overshadowed by his even more pitiful attempt to be humorous. An attempt that misses so badly - it evokes memories of trips to the free throw line during a short-lived intramural basketball career. (Career points : 2)

Awesome, garlic fries. You had the Yankees batting first. That means the Mets are New York's Home Team. I love the subliminal message there. GO METS!
