Eminem’s career has clearly been an enigmatic one, with his award-winning albums entering him into the “Greatest of All Time” discussions and earning him the unofficial title of the Greatest White Rapper Ever. He was the icon and leader of Detroit’s most famous posse named D12 (Detroit-12) whose two albums both debuted at number one on the Billboard charts. He has since faded into oblivion, without having released a single album since 2005. He has since made a comeback, releasing Relapse (2009). His latest public appearance, the MTV Movie Awards, resulted in his leaving in anger, disgust and humiliation after Sacha Baron Cohen’s character, Bruno, made his entry as he landed in Eminem’s face butt-first, spread eagle-style.
Eminem’s parallels to Isiah Thomas appear to be endless. Thomas’ award-winning performances, NBA Finals MVP and 12 NBA All-Star selections, entered him into the “Greatest of All Time” discussions and earned him the unofficial title of Greatest Small Man Ever. He was the icon and leader of Detroit’s most famous posse named The Bad Boy Pistons who were crowned NBA’s number one team both years they won the title. He has since faded into oblivion, coaching an extremely talented Indiana Pacers squad to mediocrity, running the Toronto Raptors and the Continental Basketball Association to the ground and creating a seemingly unfixable mess as the President of Basketball Operations and Head Coach of the New York Knicks. After being relieved of his duties in New York last April, he has disappeared from the public eye. He has since made a comeback, signing as the Head Coach of the Florida International University Panthers (2009).
You get the point. The similarities are endless. But if their lives continue to mirror each other, yesterday’s MTV Movie Awards can tell us one thing about Isiah Thomas’ future tenure at Florida International University. It just might result in his leaving in anger, disgust and humiliation as the ugly truth — that he absolutely sucks at everything not related to playing basketball — lands in his face, butt-first, spread eagle-style.
